Investigadores australianos han conseguido implantar un ojo biónico a una mujer ciega, con el que ? ?es capaz de distinguir las manchas de luz. ? ? Es el primer paso de esta investigación para conseguir devolverle la vista a otros pacientes ciegos mediante la tecnología.

El experimento se ha desarrollado en Bionic Vision Australia, con la colaboración del hospital Royal Victorian, según recoge el diario australiano The Age.

Según el portal de 20minutos.es, el ojo biónico se ha implantado en los ojos de Dianne Ashworth, una mujer ciega de 54 años. Unos electrodos se han dispuesto en su retina, con un receptor colocado sobre su oreja. A través de un cable, un ordenador interpreta las señales cerebrales para observar si se produce algún estímulo en el cerebro.

Los resultados iniciales han sido todo un éxito. Además de registrar señales nerviosas en el cerebro, Dianne ha sido consciente por primera vez desde hace 22 años de las variaciones lumínicas del entorno. En concreto, Dianne ha podido ver manchas de luz, alrededor de los objetos que se mueven en la escena. Esta reacción supone un paso sustancial, pues demuestra que el ojo biónico puede hacer cambios en la percepción de las señales luminosas que interpreta el cerebro de Dianne.

Ahora, los investigadores se encuentran en la segunda fase del proyecto. Se basa en determinar exactamente qué es lo que puede ver Dianne. Para ello, utilizan sus comentarios y la respuesta de sus ojos a los electrodos dispuestos detrás del ojo.

Dianne ha sido la primera afortunada que ha participado en el experimento de la universidad de Australia. Hace 22 años perdió su visión por completo, debido a una enfermedad hereditaria conocida comoretinitis pigmentosa. Esta consiste en una degeneración de los conos y los bastones, las células de la retina encargadas de asimilar el entorno visual.

"No me experaba esta reacción, ha sido realmente increíble", afirma Dianne Ashworth, la paciente de 54 años sometida al experimento.

Los investigadores son también optimistas. Si bien no aseguran que posea visión completa, consideran que sus resultados son sustanciales para avanzar en el campo de la visión humana. "Estos resultados han cumplido nuestras mejores expectativas, que nos da la confianza de que con un mayor desarrollo podemos lograr una visión útil", dijo el presidente de Bionic Vision Australia, David Penington.

Existen otros proyectos relacionados con esta tecnología por todo el mundo, aunque aún no se han testado en pacientes. Uno de ellos, es ?el implante de retina ? que algunos investigadores de la Universidad de Stanford, California, presentaron el pasado abril. Funciona como un panel solar, registrando grandes cantidades de luz para procesar siluetas.

Por el momento, el experimento australiano es el más avanzado. Su director, David Penington señala que aun encontrándose en una fase de desarrollo primaria, existen muchos planes de futuro para esta tecnología. "Todavía queda mucho por hacer en el uso del implante actual para construir imágenes para MS Ashworth. El próximo gran paso será cuando comiencen los implantes de los dispositivos completos", afirmó Penington.
